The Flipped Classroom

Why?

  • When we take notes in class, everyone has to go at the same pace and inevitably some people get left behind while others are bored.  When you take notes at home, if the video lesson is going too fast, you can pause and rewind and listen again. Or if it’s reading, you can reread.

  • Your HW of listening to a lesson (or reading a text) will be of a relatively fixed time frame

  • I can assign challenging problems for classwork because you are learning the background at home and in class you have people around you to figure things out with.  No more spinning your wheels or struggling at home all by yourself!

  • If you forget the material, you can just watch the video (or read) again to refresh your memory.

  • If you had a hard time learning from the video, you have another chance in class to learn it from your peers (and your teacher).  You can always go back to the video after we practice in class.

  • You’ll know more calculus and have more fun and be less frustrated because of reasons 1 through 6!

How it works

Outside of class (“homework time”)

  • Before our next class, at home or at school, you will watch the assigned videos (or read the assigned text).

  • During this time, you will eliminate all distractions and attend fully to your learning.  HEADPHONES are a good investment!

  • You will take notes on what you’ve learned (I will be checking!), writing examples as necessary and summarizing the key points.

  • You will pause and reflect and replay the videos as needed.

  • You will complete a short homework assignment based on the videos.

The next class

  • During the next class you will show me the evidence (notes and HW) that you have watched the video.

  • If something has come up that prevented you from watching/reading at home, you will let me know and you will watch/read during class. This will result in a loss of points and a loss of practice time in class with others, but the important thing is that you need to learn before you practice.

  • Most of the class period will be spent practicing the new topics. This will be in the form of problems and/or explorations and/or discussions with classmates.

  • I am available to answer questions others can’t answer.
